Hello again,
One theory that I have learned in my conference planning course is called attrition. This is used in the hotel industry. Attrition is basically a theory that a hotel use so that they do not lose any money when they host a large meeting at their hotel. For example if a hotel has a room block of 150 rooms and only 100 of those rooms are filled during the conference the meeting planner is responsible to pay the hotel back for those open rooms. That is one theory that I have learned from within the class room and also in my applied study site. Another theory that I have learned is “How to create a stronger Reputation” within a corporation. I learned this theory in my corporate communication course that I am currently taking. To be able to create and keep a strong reputation for a company is to advertise which will create goodwill and enhance reputation by letting the consumers in on what the organization is all about. By constantly letting the consumers in on their communication and marketing of their products and specials this will help them keep a strong and innovative reputation for their company. This relates to any type of industry and especially in the hospitality field. Right now with the economy I think every company should be creating a stronger reputation for themselves to keep their consistency of their consumers. Without a doubt this type of theory can relate to any company and field of study.

  1. Hows it going Jennifer my name is Chris Bandusky. After reading your blog I could not agree with you any more in the fact that right now with the economy I think every company should be creating a stronger reputation. Right now is the time where companys need to work even harder in order to maintain a successful business. In times of struggle one must continue to work harder in order to stay on top and continue to succeed. If they fail to do this or have a lack of preparation it will most likely not lead to a postitive outcome. Hopefully you are learning enough to know what it takes to make a company succeed. I hope that your internship continues to benefit you for your future!

  2. Ms Benson: You use a great concept that ALL businesses should embrace. From the small mom and pop stores which have reputations based on word of mouth, to large corporations that spend millions on advertising, its essential in the business world to build reputations. As consumers, times are tight right now and people are looking for work, businesses need to keep in mind not only the product or service they portray, but for employees, you need to keep up the reputation. No one really wants to work for a company, which has a bad reputation, plus no one wants to stay in a hotel that is known for stained floors and dirty mattresses. Right now, our economic situation dictates the spending power we as consumers have. But to reinvest within the private sector, it would help local business, then people might have a better feeling about their neighborhood stores. We need to support locally before we act nationally. Soon it will all hopefully turn around, and business’s will pick up, people will be able to sell those 150 room blocks needed without hesitation.

  3. Jennifer,

I really enjoy reading your blog because I find the hotel industry very interesting. I have noticed a lot of downfall in the industry because of the economy. You bring up good theories that you have learned. Having a good reputation is essential for success in these rough times. I have seen many resorts in Scottsdale that have taken a fall because the customers experience has not been top notch. I feel that your applied study site is a good choice for you. Hang in there as the economy will soon bounce back, and spring you forward with your career.
